GLP-1 Foods to Avoid
GLP-1 medications slow how fast food leaves your stomach. That's part of why they work — you feel full sooner and longer. But it also means some foods that used to sit fine now cause nausea, reflux, or hours of heaviness. This is the shortlist of GLP-1 foods to avoid, and what to eat instead.
The 12 GLP-1 foods to avoid (and why)
- Deep-fried food — high fat content, extremely slow to digest. Reliable nausea trigger.
- Sugary drinks and juice — liquid calories that don't fill you up, blood-sugar spikes.
- Alcohol, especially wine and spirits — dehydration, worsened nausea, empty calories.
- Ultra-processed snack foods (crisps, biscuits, sweets) — low protein, displace better food.
- Very fatty red meat (ribeye, fatty mince) — sits heavy for hours.
- Cream-based sauces and heavy cheese pastas — too much fat, delayed emptying.
- Large portions of pastry and pie — fat plus refined carbs, worst-case digestion.
- Sugary breakfast cereals — crash by mid-morning, poor satiety.
- Fizzy drinks including diet — bloating and reflux for many users.
- Very spicy food if you're prone to reflux — irritation on already-slow digestion.
- Large smoothies with fruit only — huge sugar load with no protein.
- Late, heavy meals — reflux at night. Finish eating 2–3 hours before bed.
Foods to eat instead
Swap the above for lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt), non-starchy vegetables, slow carbs (oats, quinoa, sweet potato, lentils), and a controlled amount of healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, nuts). See our GLP-1 foods to eat guide for the full list.
Portion size matters as much as food choice
Even 'clean' foods cause discomfort in large portions on a GLP-1. The rule of thumb: half a plate of non-starchy vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter slow carbs, and a thumb of healthy fat. Eat slowly, stop when you're satisfied — not full.

What foods make you nauseous on GLP-1?
Fried food, cream-heavy dishes, very fatty red meat, large pastries, and alcohol are the most common triggers. All of them slow gastric emptying further on top of what the medication is already doing.
Can I ever eat these foods again?
In small portions, occasionally, most people can. The issue is regular or large servings. Once you're at maintenance and off the highest dose, tolerance often improves.
Is dairy a GLP-1 food to avoid?
No. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and lower-fat milk are excellent protein sources. Full-fat cream and heavy cheeses are the specific problem, not dairy in general.
Should I avoid carbs entirely?
No. Slow, high-fibre carbs (oats, quinoa, lentils, sweet potato) are helpful. What to skip is refined carbs eaten alone — sugary drinks, white bread with jam, pastries.
